Aston Martin’s rise from where they were in 2022 to where they are now is nothing short of a miracle. But a success of this sort is never a fluke. The amount of work the Silverstone-based team has put in and the finances owner Lawrence Stroll has pumped in is massive. The Canadian tycoon is ready to take the next step in driving his team up the ladder. Fans, however, believe it will prove to be the reason behind Fernando Alonso calling it quits.
Aston Martin, as of now, is not a works team in F1. They buy their engines and many other crucial parts from Mercedes. However, the Brackley-based team is in dire straits itself as of now. In fact, Aston Martin is fairing much better than them in the championship with 4 podium finishes as of now. The Silver Arrows, on the other hand, have just one.

Aston Martin’s engine partnership with Mercedes will end at the end of the 2025 season. The new regulations, the biggest one pertaining to the engines, will kick off in 2026. Red Bull has already announced its partnership with Ford to build their power trains from the 2026 season. That will effectively end their partnership with Honda.
The Japanese engine supplier was tipped to exit F1 after Red Bull‘s decision. But Aston Martin won’t let that happen. Formula 1 recently confirmed the partnership between the two, confirming the rumors that were running around for a couple of days.

However, the move might not please Alonso, who, in the past, has very openly criticized Honda for its engines’ quality. Honda was McLaren‘s engine supplier when Alonso drove for the Woking-based team between 2015 and 2017. The Spaniard kicked up a storm during the 2015 Japanese GP when he infamously dubbed their engine a “GP2 engine“.
The fractious past between the two is the reason why fans believe Aston Martin’s move will drive Alonso away. A reminder to the readers that Alonso’s contract with Aston Martin ends at the end of the 2025 season. Given that he will be 44 in 2026, it is unlikely that the Spaniard will sign an extension, anyway.

I'm surprised Honda actually agreed to this considering their less than savoury history with Alonso driving their powertrain.
