‘Patrolling the Highways’ – Mick Schumacher Picks His Alternate Career if Not for F1

Suiting up for the Ferrari-powered Haas F1 team, Mick Schumacher will join the Formula One paddock in the 2021 season. This comes off the back of a dominant season in the feeder series for F1, Formula Two. He won the Drivers Championship while racing for Prema Racing and also helped the team secure the Constructors Championship.

Becoming a Formula One driver requires years’ worth of effort, and some people simply aren’t able to make it. Thus, everyone has a backup plan. Fortunately, the drivers we know of today didn’t have to utilize their backup plans, but it’s always fun to find out what they were.

So, what would Mick Schumacher be, if not an F1 driver?

Mick Schumacher would’ve still found his way to fast-paced driving 

In an interview with Chris Medland of Formula1.com, revealed what his alternative career choice would’ve been.

“I’ve never really thought about it, but maybe working with the traffic police or something like that.”

“I think that would be interesting, and I’d still get to be very near to speed patrolling the highways!”

Didn’t have time to focus on school: Schumi Jr

When asked about his favorite subject in school, the German driver said, “Sport! It’s not that I didn’t enjoy school but I never really had the time to focus on it.”

“My mind was always on racing or go-karting, so I’d always miss half the classes and that made it hard to combine the two. We had to be like that, so we managed, but it wasn’t easy.”

Debut season in F1

With Haas, Mick will certainly have the opportunity to make his mark in the sport. Despite this being seen by many as a head-scratcher of a move, he will have now the chance to grow in F1 without any pressure on him.

Given his rookie status, he obviously isn’t being expected to have constant points finishes. His team’s main aim will be to bring the car home, much like what George Russell has done with Williams. 

If Schumacher does that, then sooner or later, he will certainly get the chance to race for his dream team, Ferrari. The team will be tracking his progress closely if they choose him to succeed Carlos Sainz at the end of his contract.
