Be it his personal favorite of promoting up-and-coming fashion designers, or helping underprivileged talent get the platform that they deserve, he has done it all. The Mercedes maestro, through his charity 44 is on a mission to disrupt the system, with a noble mission.

Being one of the few black drivers in the sport’s history, he spearheads the cause to promote more inclusivity in F1. Now that it has been a couple of years since he started, Lewis Hamilton recently gave an update on his mission during an interview with Vogue.

Hamilton believes that change is definitely necessary to help promote underprivileged talent. Not only has he donated to a lot of organizations, but he also has created Mission 44 to fund his noble goals as well. He is a strong proponent of change having to occur from the grassroots level, and this is what he is promoting through his organization Mission 44. On their website Mission44.org, here’s what they say about ‘disrupting the system.’

“Change on a societal level requires collective action. So we collaborate with a diverse range of initiatives. We fund bold organizations, leaders, and ideas who share our vision for a more inclusive future, and who may have been previously overlooked or underfunded. In addition, we use our influential network and platform to campaign for change, raising the profile of young people and getting their voices heard.”

Now that it’s been a good couple of years since the charity was launched, he recently gave an update to Vogue. On top of promoting underprivileged talents, the org is now involved in helping youth get into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs. Speaking to Vogue, he commented, “I mean, we’ve only really started the work, what is it like, two years ago now? We’re just in the beginning of starting to see some real change. We have to continue to work to create more accessibility and particularly work on helping youth trying to get into STEM subjects so that we can create a better future for them.”

Speaking to BBC, Hamilton revealed that he had commissioned a study to understand the diversity of talent available, especially in motorsport. Finding out about the lack of diversity in motorsport, especially within the UK, he has doubled down on improving the pipeline.

Hamilton revealed how difficult he found it in school, and, in general, how it was not a happy experience for him. Now that he has an amazing platform, he talked about how it would be a shame if he did not utilize this. By focusing on providing STEM education to the underprivileged section of the community, Hamilton hopes the situation changes shortly.

“There are thousands and thousands of jobs, over 40,000 jobs within the industry [motorsport], and only 1% for example, come from black backgrounds and there are very few women in the industry, which is also not enough. So there’s a huge amount of work to increase diversity and gender equality and these are the things that I hope to achieve with my charity,” he commented.
