Unlike any other race on the calendar, Singapore is one tough cookie to crack as a race driver. Not only is it extremely demanding, but it also tests the drivers in every aspect possible. As the race returns after a gap of two years, drivers have been taking special training in order to battle the extreme physical pressure. One such driver who will have to take extra precautions is Williams Racing’s Alex Albon.

Williams Racing released a statement stating that Alex will be racing in the Singapore GP. However, they have put last race’s star driver Nyck de Vries on standby if need be. Albon had appendicitis ahead of the Italian GP qualifying on Sunday.

This meant Nyck had to substitute for the former Red Bull man at the last minute. However, he shone with flying colors as he out-qualified his teammate in both, the qualifying and the main race to finish P9 in his debut F1 GP.

Albon shared an update about his health on his Twitter. He captioned, “Intense week of training and doing everything possible to get ready for Singapore. Feeling good and looking forward to the weekend, let’s see what it has in store.”

After missing out on the race in Monza, Alex Albon will be gunning to return to action in the upcoming Singapore GP. However, since Albon has just returned from surgery, it would be interesting to see if Williams stick to their decision.

Former F1 world champion suggests Nyck de Vries should get the nod to replace Alex Albon in Singapore

F1 World Champion Damon Hill believes that Williams must start the Singapore GP with Nyck de Vries instead of Alex Albon. The latter had surgery and was further shifted to a brief period in intensive care. However, Damon Hill also suggested that it wouldn’t be easy for the Mercedes reserve driver either.

Damon Hill said on the F1 Nation podcast, “This is one of the biggest, toughest challenges. Nyck if he does go to Singapore, he thought his shoulders were aching after Monza, he’s gonna be in for the biggest physical challenge of his career if he has to do Singapore.”

He further added, “But then of course, Alex is not fully fit and of course if he’s had internal stitches, you gotta have time for them to heal, you can’t be bouncing around and dehydrating in a Formula 1 car for 2 hours round a boiling hot race track.”

“So it’s good chance Nyck could find himself put to the test in this boiling hot cauldron.”
