In a recent heart-to-heart with Formula 1 expert Peter Windsor, Otmar Szafnauer, one of the driving forces behind Aston Martin‘s Formula 1 endeavor, has pulled back the curtain on his unexpected departure from the Silverstone-based racing team. As a stalwart in the paddock for over a decade, Szafnauer’s journey with the squad witnessed dramatic highs and unforeseen lows, culminating in a surprising exit that Formula 1 fans did not see coming.
Under Szafnauer’s astute leadership, the team transformed from Force India to Racing Point, finally donning the iconic Aston Martin moniker in 2021. However, the transition was more than just a rebrand. It was a testament to Szafnauer’s knack for steering a team through a dance of ownership changes while ensuring competitive prowess on the track. However, this fruitful alliance hit a sudden speed bump at the start of the 2022 season when Szafnauer bid adieu to Aston Martin.
What was the catalyst that made Otmar Szafnauer want to leave Aston Martin?

Change in the management structure was the main cause, as Szafnauer explains it. In a candid revelation, Szafnauer expressed his discontent, articulating that Lawrence Stroll‘s vision for championship success led to the recruitment of individuals who had done it in the past. The unintended casualty? Szafnauer’s pivotal role within the team was subsequently reduced as Martin Whitmarsh assumed a significant part of his responsibilities.
“Lawrence [Stroll] was successful in the past, very successful in his other businesses by hiring people that have been successful elsewhere and bringing him along to his team,” Szafnauer told Peter Windsor. However, he also emphasized his own track record with Force India. “As successful as I was at Force India with the smallest budget and the least amount of people, finishing regularly fourth in the championship and beating many teams that had more people and bigger budgets. We weren’t regular world champions, or we weren’t world champions at all, and we weren’t regular winners or podium finishers.”
“[Lawrence Stroll] ended up recruiting Martin Whitmarsh to take a big part of my job… I guess I could have stayed there as team principal and done 20% of what I used to do. But to me, going racing and being team principal is the culmination of a lot of hard work, and I prefer most of the work done at the factory,” Szafnauer added.
The altered dynamics within the team, triggered by Stroll’s quest for championship glory, presented a misalignment with Szafnauer’s vision, prompting his exit from a team he had been an integral part of for so long. Having undergone multiple transformations in recent years, the Aston Martin squad is slated for yet another name change in 2024.
Aston Martin says goodbye to Cognizant
Aston Martin is gearing up for a new era with a significant change in its title sponsorship. Cognizant bids adieu, making way for energy and chemicals titan Aramco to step in as the exclusive title sponsor, signaling a long-term commitment to the Silverstone-based racing outfit.
The team will now proudly don the moniker “Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team.“ The collaboration extends beyond a mere branding change, with Aramco outlining ambitious plans to enhance the team’s performance. Starting in 2026, the energy giant will introduce cutting-edge technology in the form of advanced fuels and lubricants, aiming to push the boundaries of on-track excellence.
