Oscar Piastri's win: A sign of more to come or just a one-off? What do you think?

Creating history at the 2024 Hungarian GP, McLaren No.2 Oscar Piastri just won his maiden race. What a moment for the Aussie! When it looked like Lando Norris wouldn’t let his once-race-leader teammate pass, the miracle happened. The last few laps of Hungaroring witnessed team spirit at its best. And as Piastri passed the chequered flag, he added a feather of achievements to his hat.

Piastri’s mom, Nicole watched the race from the comforts of her home. And as you can guess, she was nervous. As she saw her son take over in Budapest, it was already early morning in Australia. Mama Piastri was supposed to head out for her pilates class later, but now she must cancel her plans. Why? Because the entire family is surely going to plan a party to celebrate their boy’s great win.

Nicole shared the change in plans on her X handle. She wrote: “6 am Pilates just canceled,” followed by a popping champagne emoji. Within the next few minutes, she shared another photo where she was mid-air in front of the TV screen when Oscar Piastri was standing on the highest podium. The sweetest part of the picture was Nicole’s ‘Oscar Piastri Eras Tour’ t-shirt.

While the Piastri household headed out to party, Papa Norris was present in Budapest to congratulate his son, Lando. The Brit’s selfless sacrifice at the end brought McLaren the highest merits. However, Norris’ face reflected his sadness. Letting go of another win must have been difficult for him, but at the end of the day, his team benefitted. So, it was a win-win situation.

Oscar Piastri’s win was a gift from Lando Norris as he conceded his lead for the team

Have an interesting take?

As the race continued to pick pace towards the last laps, chances of Lando Norris letting Oscar Piastri pass seemed to diminish. Norris began receiving orders from the team to let the Aussie pass. This ‘drama’ began almost 20 laps before the chequered flag. However, Norris kept his lead over Piastri, and at a certain point, the delta time between the two teammates was around 6 seconds.

Lando did not want to give away his win. However, with just two laps to go, he paid heed to his race engineer’s requests to finally follow the team’s orders. By now, Piastri had started to panic. He stated: “The longer you leave it, the more you get a bit nervous but yeah I think it was the right thing, I put myself in the right position at the start and yes, my pace wasn’t what I wanted in the last stint but well managed by the team.” The 23-year-old implied that the switch needed to be swift, or else it would have become impossible to do so in the last minutes. Ultimately, Norris conceded his lead and the rest is history.
