Does Oscar Piastri's grit make him a bigger hero than Daniel Ricciardo in Australian motorsport?

Imagine being only 23 and already having a country-wide holiday after your name. Well, that might be Oscar Piastri‘s bragging rights soon as per recent news. The McLaren prodigy is the true definition of a successful racer. He has won multiple titles in the junior leagues, including the FIA F3 and FIA F2 Championships. And in 2023, he made his Formula 1 debut for McLaren after serving as an Alpine reserve driver. But did the Aussie stop at that? No, he went on to improve upon his performance in the pinnacle of motorsports and now, he regularly competes with the best of the best on the grid.

It might be Piastri’s second season in F1, but you will never guess that from his race results. He has bagged 4 podium finishes in the first half of 2025 and is in P4 on the world rankings. But his biggest claim to fame came when he soared to victory at the Hungarian GP, showing off the incredible speed of his McLaren MCL-36. However, Oscar Piastri was in great pain even when he had scored his career’s biggest win. Why is that? Well, the Aussie recently revealed that he had raced in the last two GPs before the summer break with a broken rib.

While F1 is currently on a break for the summer, Oscar Piastri took to X and summarized his first half of 2024. He wrote, “First part of the season done. First GP victory. First broken rib. Rib’s enjoying the break.” Well, his die-hard fans hailed the Australian for achieving such a difficult feat as winning an F1 race when he was not even at his best physically. So, they placed a request to start a petition for Piastri. They wanted to name July 21 (the day Oscar won the Budapest race) after the McLaren racer.

In a shocking turn of events, the petition has been accepted by the approval committee. Sharing the good news on X, a user wrote on their wall, “No way, guys! Go sign it. It got accepted!” Now, the signature window for the petition will remain open between August 14 and September 11. As of now, 105 signatures have already been done and more should be coming Oscar Piastri’s way. But how did Piastri’s whirlwind victory in Hungary boil down to a last-minute decision from Lando Norris?

Lando Norris ended up giving a boon to Oscar Piastri in Hungary

The Hungarian GP surely saw some fluctuations in the heartbeat rates of all the F1 fans. The thrill of the race was taut until the very last moment. This was all because of McLaren’s two racers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Piastri captured the lead of the grid early on as Lando could not get that spot despite his pole position. However, Norris was called into the pits earlier than Piastri. This allowed the Belgian-British racer to have an undercut. Thus, McLaren’s own strategy made their race frontrunner get trumped by their second-place runner.

However, after a ton of attempts by the papaya army at brain-washing Lando over the team radio so that he gave away the P1 position to Oscar, he conceded. Thus, Oscar Piastri soared to victory thanks to Lando’s selflessness. However, the more prudent thing would have been to let Lando take the win since he is currently in a Championship fight with Max Verstappen. Speaking on his thoughts at the time when McLaren advised him to let Oscar Piastri take his place, Lando said, “It was tough. I think it would be tough for anyone when you’re leading the race to give it up.”

However, Lando Norris showed that he values team spirit above his own ambitions. But do you think, if the time comes, Oscar Piastri will also show similar team spirit to help Lando bag race wins?
