Oscar Piastri as the new 'Ice Man'—Is he the right choice to carry Raikkonen's legacy?

The ghost of F1’s favorite Finnish racer is still here amongst us! Well, Kimi Raikkonen retired from the sport in 2021. Interestingly, just 2 years later, Oscar Piastri stepped into the premiere motor racing league. Now, fans believe the two of them have a very similar attitude since they hardly ever express too many emotions, and many have given Piastri the moniker of F1’s new ‘Ice Man’, which was Kimi Raïkkonen’s trademark title.

Oscar Piastri has been the name that’s going around in F1 town ever since last week. The youngster soared to victory at the Hungarian GP with significant help from his teammate Lando Norris. But even after winning such a challenging race, the Australian remained calm and composed over the team radio. In fact, F1 journalist Will Buxton even commented on his demeanor, saying, “[Oscar’s is] one of the most subdued first-time winner’s radios I’ve ever heard.

In the past, F1 Grand Prix winners have always celebrated their victories in the wildest ways (of course we are looking at Daniel Ricciardo‘s Monaco GP 2018 win). But Oscar Piastri’s not-so-enthusiastic nature even after scoring his maiden victory intrigued fans. And then came the Formula 1 YouTuber Lollypopman who made a skit on Piastri. In the video, he showed how Oscar Piastri is almost like Kimi Raikkonen because they both have the least amount of excitement after winning races!

Lollypopman perfectly depicted how both Oscar and Kimi seem like men of few words. In his skit, the Aussie appeared to be the ex-Ferrari man’s “disciple” as they shared a conversation that consisted of just “bwoahs” and “Kimis“. For those of you who don’t remember: “bwoah” is what Kimi Raikkonen used to say over his team radio whenever his race engineer called on him. Now, Piastri spotted the skit on social media, and his reaction only consisted of one word: “bwoah“. Oscar Piastri might not be into celebrating over the team radio after winning a race, but he did so by cuddling with a special someone, once he went back home.

Oscar Piastri had a very personal moment to celebrate Hungarian GP win

Throughout the Hungarian GP weekend, Oscar Piastri was in flying form, thanks to his McLaren MCL38. Along with Lando Norris, Piastri locked out the front row in the starting grid for the Budapest race. When he finally won after a dramatic position swap with Norris, he did not seem to be ecstatic about his first-ever F1 win. But he only shied away from celebrating in public because he knew someone was waiting for him back home–his girlfriend Lily Zneimer.

Describing the time when Piastri and Zneimer met, following his victory at Hungaroring, the McLaren prodigy said, “So I got home at 5 am, just because I was flying. My girlfriend was waiting at home, so…yeah, I don’t know, had a cuddle with her and then we went straight to bed because we were both exhausted.” This shows the ‘lover boy’ that Piastri is at heart, even though he does not share much in front of the media.

While Piastri remains very personal about his relationship with Lily Zneimer, he has said that the two have been together since high school. Lily is an engineering student, and might even be looking for a job in F1 right now. Was Oscar’s heart-touching moment with his girlfriend a wholesome celebration to you?
