While the dramatic streets of Baku will always be where the driver can make a difference, the improvement in machines is no less of a blessing. McLaren had been running their last year’s challenger in the disguise of MCL60 in the hope of overturning the misfortunes with Baku upgrades. And for the first time, their estimation has been right. Both their drivers who made it to Q3 yesterday are a testament to the same. And the rookie Oscar Piastri cannot stop gushing.

The team began their 2023 season campaign almost reminding us of the dreadful McLaren-Honda days around the year 2015. Lando Norris got lapped by his best mate Max Verstappen and Piastri had only a 15-lap run time in his first GP. The bankable qualifier Lando Norris couldn’t make much of a difference either. While the decision of picking McLaren over other teams may be getting ready to haunt Oscar, the disappointing narrative now is up for a makeover.

As quoted by Speedcafe, talking about the revised floor, a circuit-specific rear and beam wing, a very ecstatic Piastri said, “The car is feeling good.” To justify his proclamation, he stated, “In terms of balance and behavior, it feels pretty similar to how it was previously, it’s just faster.”

“That’s a good place to be in. I don’t know if our car is just working well here with the new Tarmac, or these upgrades are working a bit better than we thought, but it seems to be a good step forward, which is really encouraging for the rest of the year.”

At the fourth GP of the year, McLaren began a week worthy of its 60-year-old legacy. Both the drivers escaping the chaos made it into Q3 and will start the Sunday race from a good place. Piastri declaring how surprising it was to see both cars reach Q3 went on to appreciate the car and his own performance as this will mark his second Q3 entry of the F1 career.

Oscar said, “We kind of ran out of tyres at the end in Q3. It compromised us a little bit, and obviously doing the same lap time as Lance hurts a little bit. All in all, it’s a good day, a good start to the weekend”
