Red Bull’s sudden drop in performance hasn’t gone unnoticed. They have become a team that can be easily beaten in a race. Especially for Sergio Perez, the situation is even worse. With a two-year extension, he was expected to boost his race results, but quite the opposite has happened. A terrible streak of poor races and the looming fear of replacement has grappled Perez by his throat. Meanwhile, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri is looking at the brighter side of this dip! Speaking after the British GP, the 23-year-old gave an insight into his mind.
Aussie driver Oscar Piastri, often considered the ‘Kimi Raikkonen’ of the present grid, expressed his thoughts on Red Bull’s situation. Looking at the positive aspects of the degradation for his team, Piastri seems to stir the F1 waters. His sharp observations and straightforward opinions make him the audience favorite. The young driver is truly unique! So what were his words?

Following the British Grand Prix, the 23-year-old spoke his mind. “It helps us that Pérez scores poorly,” Piastri acknowledges. “Max has to do it on his own. It helps to have two cars in the front. That offers opportunities and yields a lot of points.” The rise is purely the result of teamwork, Melbourne-born continues. Piastri implies that the more Sergio Perez stays out of the top 10, the better for McLaren. While Verstappen is pulling Red Bull up on his own, McLaren drivers are working together as a team and even scoring in all the races.
After a difficult start to the season, McLaren has overtaken Ferrari in the championship standings. And in races, the orange cars can even challenge Max Verstappen. Piastri further continued, “Lando and I give useful feedback to the team. We have been wanting more or less the same thing for a year and a half. A thousand people are going to work on it. That’s where the key lies.” Since the beginning of the season, McLaren has emerged as a strong force on the track. Not just Lando Norris, but Oscar Piastri too is doing a commendable job in the races. Piastri is collecting accolades from the audience. He is one of the fastest drivers on the present grid and a true terror at the same time.
Meanwhile, his awareness of the current situation in his rival team shows his vigilance in the sport. Which, again, is extremely appreciable. Going strong on the track, pairing finely with his teammate Lando Norris, the Aussie is doing brilliantly. However, Silverstone wouldn’t be counted as one of their best races due to strategic failure. But keeping aside that, Piastri is already a big name in F1.

Oscar Piastri’s 2024 F1 season so far has been a story of ups and downs
Several times, the Aussie faced setbacks when officials deleted his lap times for various reasons. But nothing can undermine his mastery behind the steering wheel. “It’s also a matter of patience,” he believes. Setbacks are a necessary part of being an F1 driver. One can achieve improvement only through these setbacks and dips. Piastri is currently 6th on the Championship table, ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton and just below Red Bull’s struggling driver Sergio Perez. This high rank on the table speaks for itself. Had he been an average driver, he wouldn’t have been in the top 10.

The Aussie won his first sprint race at the 2023 Qatar GP; he won before Lando Norris, who then was in his fourth year with McLaren! This year, he has secured two podiums out of the twelve races and has scored points in every race. However, Oscar considers Max Verstappen his real target and is determined to dethrone him. “I haven’t faced him much on track because he dominates. He fights hard, but I’m not backing down. I want to beat everyone. Max knows little about me, which might work to my advantage.”
