Ending the 2022 season on a low note, among many, was also Mick Schumacher. We all know the promising young German lost his seat and moved to Mercedes as a reserve driver. Many will look at the reserve driver role as a step back in young Schumacher’s career. However, there are some who believe that the decision to join Mercedes will reap more rewards for him in the long run. Among many who share this opinion is his former boss, Guenther Steiner.

Steiner chose to go with the experience of Nico Hulkenberg as he has revealed in the past. However, now sympathizing with the German, the Haas boss believes Schumacher is best placed at Mercedes with one example. An example he revealed in his conversation with RTL as reported by Crash.net.

He used the fresh example of F1’s newest recruit, Nyck de Vries, who also took the Mercedes route for a permanent seat.

“I think he is in a good position at Mercedes. Mercedes has a lot of sister teams,” Steiner said. The Haas team boss then used the De Vries example. “He jumped in at Williams and got a permanent seat at AlphaTauri through this route.”

Sympathizing with the German, Steiner concluded, “Sometimes one step back is two steps forward. He has put himself in a good position with a team where he has the best chance of getting a permanent seat in the future.”

The German not only lost his seat with the team he spent two years with, but also he had no chance of working with the team in 2023. Speaking to GP Fans, Steiner disclosed why that is.

He said, “I didn’t ask him, to be honest. It’s always difficult for somebody, if you have driven for a team, to then be relegated to reserve driver. I don’t think he would be happy with that. He didn’t approach me about that, and I didn’t want to [approach him about it]. It’s a bit cheap to ask him.”
