Ever since the start of this season, there has been a debate spurring amongst the fans – Max Verstappen or Lewis Hamilton: Who is the better driver? Both fanbases have often clashed on social media.

Of course, as spectators, it is quite hard to differentiate, considering both the title-contenders are equal on points and have almost performed rather uniformly throughout the season.

However, having raced with the pair on the track, a lot of drivers have already expressed their opinion over who they’re rooting for, including Lando Norris, who felt Verstappen is deserving enough to win the championship title. Well, the list has extended a bit further.

This time, it’s Hamilton’s former McLaren rival, Fernando Alonso. During the press conference ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Spaniard reckoned that Verstappen has been a step ahead of the rest of the grid throughout this season.

Fernando Alonso on Max Verstappen

The title showdown in Abud Dhabi is almost upon us. Amidst the ever-rising pressure over the drivers, the teams, and their respective fans, Alonso has come out to offer his support to Verstappen.

And while he wished that the Dutchman takes the drivers’ championship, he also opined that Mercedes are more deserving to win the constructors’ championship.

Max is driving, in my opinion, one step ahead of all of us. Mercedes deserve the constructors’ championship because the car is superior. Max, he deserves [the title] in my opinion,” Alonso said.

Overall, Verstappen has nine wins in the bag, one more than his title rival, Hamilton. Hence, on paper, the Dutchman does hold an upper hand over Hamilton despite the duo heading into the final race equal on points.
