Harrowing, gut-wrenching, and a rollercoaster of emotions is how every Lewis Hamilton fan would describe the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP. The epic 2021 season concluded with a one-in-a-million scenario. A scenario that completely changed the narrative of the sport depending on who you support. A scenario that resulted in Max Verstappen picking up his maiden world champion title.
However, the scenario, if tweaked, could’ve become the greatest achievement by a single driver in the F1’s history. But since we cannot turn back time, the scenario will always be limited to “what-if”.

However, some cannot stop discussing the what-ifs of one of the most enthralling ends of an F1 championship. Award-winning journalist and former team manager Peter Windsor did just that with his beautiful summation of Abu Dhabi.
“Any TV director/co-commentator who couldn’t have brought tears to everybody’s eyes as Lewis Hamilton was driving that last lap at Abu Dhabi behind the safety car, waving to the crowd, fireworks going off, under the night sky, having just broken Michael Schumacher’s record.”
“Anybody that couldn’t have made that moment work, put prosperity in the history of Formula 1, shouldn’t be in the job in the first place,” said Windsor.
“Not only do I think it was wrong to finish as a race in Abu Dhabi. I think Formula 1 missed a massive opportunity to create one of the most emotionally charged moments in the history of its sport,” further added the Australian journalist.

The Abu Dhabi incident has become a talking point again because of all the events of the Sunday in Monza. This is not just because of the events in the premier racing class but also because of the events in two classes lower that caught the attention of the fans.
Firstly, in Formula 3, the FIA voided two laps from the race, which could’ve affected the proceedings. However, it didn’t and Victor Martins remained champion. However, FIA’s decision to end the race behind a safety car in the premier class made Hamilton’s fans the angriest. The fandom, even after the Abu Dhabi GP, was of the belief the race should’ve ended behind a safety car.
