The young Brit was on fire that day as he pulled off moves that got the world talking. One of the moves he pulled off was against his GP2 rival and former F1 driver Nelson Piquet Jr.

Starting the race in P8, Hamilton did not back down and soon overtook the Brazilian driver, who is the son of 3-time world champion Nelson Piquet. The Stevenage native calls the overtake on Piquet one of his all-time favorite moments as the Brazilian went into the barriers.

” Yeah, it was so cool. This is one of my all-time favorite moments seeing Piquet going through that barrier. I remember seeing in my wing mirror him go through that,” said Hamilton while laughing.

Nelson Piquet Sr. has recently been in the news as he used a racial slur while describing the incident between Hamilton and Verstappen in Silverstone 2021. He has been getting major backlash from everyone for his choice of words.

F1 incident that led to Nelson Piquet-Lewis Hamilton controversy Blow-Up

Hamilton and Verstappen were going hammer and tongs throughout the entire season, especially at the British GP last year. And in Silverstone, the rivalry was blazing hot, with Verstappen seeking a way to hold off Hamilton at the start of the race. The seven-time world champion, however, managed to keep Verstappen off the racing line and forced him to take unpleasant entries into corners.

Ultimately, Hamilton embraced a much better exit out of Woodcote and attempted to beat Verstappen around the inside of the Copse corner. But it all went haywire from that moment.

They crashed in a spectacular manner, as a minor tap into the right-rear of the Red Bull hurled the Dutchman into the barriers at high speed. The 51G incident, consequently, sent the Red Bull driver to the hospital. But, the 7-time world champion mentioned it was hard racing and he would do it again if the opportunity came.

“In terms of the move, I’d do it again exactly as I’ve done it in the past. I think, growing up, wheel-to-wheel racing was always the best, from karting,” said Hamilton.

“The most exciting part of motorsport is when you see close racing. We’re now seeing two teams incredibly close on performance. And if there’s more people watching, then that tells you all you need to know,” he continued.
