The way this season has unfolded so far, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso must be on cloud nine. The Spaniard has finally got a car, after a long, long wait, that deserves his talents. And if anyone was doubting, Alonso has proven his sublime driving talent by finishing on the podium consecutively. Alonso deserves all the praise available for the way he has performed this season. However, we must not forget all the hard work the boys and girls back at Aston Martin have done over the off-season.

Alonso himself isn’t in the mood to forget this. After being lumped into uncompetitive machinery for some time now, the Spaniard finally possesses machinery capable of fighting at the front. And Alonso wasn’t wasting any time in giving the credit to his team where it was due. Be that as it may, in pure Fernando Alonso fashion, the 41-year-old spoke about the cost cap headache while taking shots at other teams, including his ex-employers Ferrari.

MotorsportWeek.com quoted him as saying, “Ferrari, in 2021 they were very bad. And then last year they were fighting for the championship, or they won two of the first grands prix of the year. Ferrari made a huge step last year, Brawn GP obviously [in 2009]. [But] non-regulation change, it [Aston Martin] is probably the biggest one. All of the others, they were with a regulation change.”

“But this one is with the same regulations, plus the cost cap. So it is very difficult to do something like that. We have very talented people in the team. So far it has been a good start, and hopefully only the start,” explained the Spaniard while lamenting having to deal with the $135 million cost cap.

Aston Martin, by the looks of it, still has a bit more work to do. But Alonso is already sipping the champagne of glory.

If we had quizzed Alonso about his championship aspirations a mere six months ago, he’d have balled up in a rage. But the tides of fortune have turned pretty quickly for the Spaniard. He recently spoke about his chances for this season.

He told Luxury London, “I still think that a third championship is possible. I feel fast, I feel fit. I feel motivated. Obviously, I want to win more races and I want to fight for championships in the future. I worked hard for that and, although it’s difficult to have a guarantee of success in Formula 1, everyone that sees me working knows that I will give 100 percent.”

“I will not give up that easily, so let’s see if we can do it.”
