Fernando Alonso's Olympic dream for F1—Is it a game-changer or just wishful thinking?

The Olympics are here and they will make sure this year’s F1 summer break is not too boring. However, motorsports fans would have loved to see their favorite racers battle for their countries at the Games. A total of 42 disciplines currently appear on the Summer Olympics roster. And racing is nowhere on the schedule that spreads over 2 weeks. Thus, even though F1 has achieved a global status now, it is not an Olympic sport per se.

The Paris Olympics 2024 is like a major sports meet where players come to represent their nations. But in F1, the drivers don’t race for their countries; rather, they are recruited under teams that are worth millions. And the racers need to make sure their teams win against all the competitors. Naturally, F1 racers might also want to fight for their countries at an international level. However, the Olympics has not allowed that since racing is not a part of its events.

Surfing, sport climbing, breaking, and skateboarding are the five new entrants in the Olympic games. But car racing still does not come under it. Highlighting this issue, Sky Sports F1’s David Croft questioned the F1 racers at the press conference ahead of the Bahrain GP. The Briton asked, as per FIA, “It amazes me that motorsport is not represented at the Olympics. How much would you like the chance to represent your countries in, say, a karting event?”

Fernando Alonso responded to Croft’s question, saying, “I think we represent our countries in a way every two weeks. This [F1] is not an Olympic sport yet, but ideally, it will be nice to have it in the future for sportsmen and racing drivers to have the possibility.” Thus, Alonso believes the F1 racers do make their countries proud with their wins even though they contest for their teams at the end of the day.

Nando opened up about his idea to include motor racing in the Olympics, but he also said this is unlikely because of a certain reason. So, what was it?

Fernando Alonso blames design differences between F1 cars

The Olympic Games do not include motorsports at this stage. But the fans need to wait for Alonso’s idea to go through. Then, the Olympics committee might include karting as one of the events. However, a big point in motor racing is that the teams develop different cars. These machines have their particular characteristics. And no two machines are the same. At the Olympics, each athlete gets equal chances to shine through for their country. If they include motor racing, it will be difficult to ensure that all the cars are the same.

Thus, Fernando Alonso negated the possibility of his own idea of racing for the Olympics. He mentioned, “I think it’s [racing as an event in the Olympic Games] quite unlikely because we have the machine with us. Even if you try to organize a go-kart race with exactly the same go-karts, it will never be exactly the same, probably. So, yeah, it is a very unique sport.” Thus, Alonso believes that the uniqueness of his sport matches no other event that currently comes under the Olympic Games.

Now, we can come to Alonso’s current position in Formula 1. The Aston Martin racer has recently signed a new contract with his team. Thus, he will stay on through 2025 and until 2026. So, when the new regulations arrived in the ’26 season, the 42-year-old will be around to test them. Do you think the former McLaren star will rediscover his strength in F1’s new era? Comment below.
