Renault’s Esteban Ocon has had an unlucky season, to say the least. Suffering retirements on more than three occasions, the French driver has tried his best on race days to match his teammate Daniel Ricciardo. But even if the car is performing at full optimal capacity, Ocon has been relatively slower than his teammate who has out-qualified him on 10 out of 11 races this season.
Ocon, however, finds himself in a curious situation for the next season as he will team up with double world champion Fernando Alonso.
Daniel Ricciardo is the strongest teammate for Ocon so far

The Eifel Grand Prix podium finisher has looked to be the lead driver for Renault since his arrival. That is not to say Ocon has been sidelined, but he has faced a great deal of tough competition.
Speaking in an interview, Renault team principal Cyril Abiteboul stated, “We’re talking about Daniel Ricciardo. He’s never had such a strong team-mate.”
“He’s had good team-mates and Perez in particular is strong. But I think Daniel is stronger.” (translated from Google Translate)
Sergio Perez was Esteban Ocon’s teammate during their Force India days, with the team now known as Racing Point. Even in the 2018 season, Perez finished eighth in the Drivers’ standings while Ocon finished at No.12.

Like every young and inexperienced driver, there is a great learning curve for Ocon while he races alongside his vastly experienced teammates. Sometimes, there have been errors on his end as well.
“He has to set himself realistic goals and also look at his current performance. For which he doesn’t have to be ashamed.”
“Like many young drivers, he is sometimes impatient, which leads to small mistakes. But I’m not worried that this cannot be fixed. And with the support of the team that will be fixed.” said Abiteboul. (translated from Google Translate)

It sounds like Abiteboul is not overly concerned about the situation then. Nevertheless, Ocon will need to improve on his current performances for Renault to continue keeping their faith in him.
