After three years of waiting, George Russell finally scored his first points for Williams Racing at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Even though he’s already proved himself to everyone that matters, the P8 at Hungaroring will do a lot of good for Russell in his quest to get the Mercedes drive next season.
The British driver was in tears when finally he realized the magnitude of his race result. But George was also quick to acknowledge the performance of the race winner and fellow Mercedes Academy driver, Esteban Ocon.

Ocon is often there in those key moments: George Russell on Esteban’s win
As reported by GPFans, the Williams driver mentioned that Esteban Ocon is a worthy race winner in F1. He also stated that Ocon is always there to capitalize on a crazy race and maximize the race result.
” He’s [Ocon] often there in those key moments,” said Russell.
“There are many drivers on this Formula 1 grid who deserve to be winning races or fighting for victories week in, week out. Esteban is one of them.
Unfortunately, many drivers don’t have that opportunity right now but it’s fantastic that we can show some sort of speed and that it’s not just the Lewis and Max show,” said the Williams driver.

Russell hopes to get the chance to fight against Lewis in a Mercedes
George Russell is the hottest driver in F1 right now; his performances in a Williams in 2021 have left everyone in the paddock impressed. He is currently in contention for the second seat at Mercedes to partner Lewis Hamilton for the 2022 season.

“I think that’s why we’re all so excited for next year,” said Russell.
“We just all want a closer playing field and let the best man win. I really believe Lewis is the best driver out there because I have been inside that Mercedes team. I know what he does.

“Often, the best driver gets in the best team. If every single car was the same, he’d still be fighting for the world championship. There’s not a single doubt about that. I think, even he would welcome a more [open] championship,” said Russell.
It’s possibly only a matter of time before we’ll see Russell behind the wheels of a Mercedes. And who knows? Maybe we’ll see a Russell-Ocon lineup one day! Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff personally manages the Frenchman, and let’s be honest, crazier things have happened in F1.
