History was made when an American driver made it to the F1 grid in 2023. After 8 years of waiting, American F1 fans have finally found someone who they can unconditionally root for. It is none other than Florida-born Rookie Logan Sargeant, driving for Williams. And in his rookie year, he has received praise and advice from 2-time World Champion, Max Verstappen. Though the advice was valuable, it came with a bit of mockery.

In their rookie years, drivers are not expected to score a lot of points, let alone fight for wins. The first year is usually for getting accustomed to the pace of F1 and gaining some experience battling it out with the best of the best. And Logan Sargeant is in that period, gaining valuable experience and learning lessons by being in the thick of things. In a recent interview, Verstappen was asked what advice would he give Logan Sargeant for his stay in F1.

In reply, Verstappen said, “Enjoy it. In a team where he’s not gonna fight for wins but it’s maybe good. In your first year, you don’t necessarily need that or want that. Of course, everyone wants to win, right? But when you have very little experience… I am also very happy that I started at Toro Rosso, for example.”

He further added, “Just build that experience. Just hope he learns a lot in that first year. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself because it’s an amazing opportunity. You are there, you deserve it. I wish him the best.” The advice was sprinkled with a bit of trolling in the beginning, but it was quite helpful especially as Max cited his personal experience from his debut days at Toro Rosso.

Sargeant might be having a decent 1st year. But if not for Williams, he would not have gotten that chance in the first place. Williams has been his lifeline & without it, the Florida man may not have been in F1.

Williams Give Lease of Life to Almost Broke Logan Sargeant

Everybody knows that F1 is a niche and very expensive sport to be in. To drive in F3, a driver needs nearly a million dollars. And it gets more expensive as they progress to F2. The price for F2 is around 2 million dollars. Sargeant spent three years in F3. By the end of 2020, he had no finances and decided to go back home to his family.

Sargeant said, as quoted by The Athletic, “I pretty much had nothing at the end of that year.” He could not progress to F2. But in 2021, Williams made him a part of its Driving academy and gave him a taste of F1.

Since then, he has proved his worth to the team management and found somewhat of a footing in F1. But compared to his teammate, Alex Albon, he is lagging far behind. It remains to be seen if Sargeant can keep his place in Williams, and F1.
