But what if Max Verstappen did not race? If you have ever wondered what the golden star of F1 would be doing in an alternate life, here are some clues to the answer.
Max Verstappen reveals his childhood dream
It is no secret that Verstappen wanted to go into racing from a very early age. This led him to be the youngest Formula One driver at the age of 17.
But very few people have their careers figured out at that young age. Did Verstappen never think of any other path to follow?
The answer is yes; he did!
In an Instagram post in 2014, Verstappen revealed that he “always wanted to be a mechanic!”

In a throwback picture, we can see little Verstappen still with his pacifier in his mouth. Behind him is his father, a much younger Jos Verstappen, smiling at the camera. The two stand near the hood of a car, possibly in a garage, with baby Verstappen adorably holding a tool.
Growing up in a household of racing, no doubt Max was exposed to the universe of motorsports very early on. In an interview with Sports Illustrated Kids, Verstappen mentioned that “the engines, the smell of the fuel. These kind of things at the time were really interesting to me [as a kid].”
It is not unlikely that had he not been racing, Max Verstappen might have been a mechanic.
A career shaped by the older Verstappen
If Max Verstappen gave up a potential career as a mechanic, Jos Verstappen became one for his son.
“Since he stopped racing in F1, he basically spent all his time preparing me in the best way possible. We grew up together, he was my go-kart mechanic,” says Verstappen about his father.
Despite growing up with racing parents, Max was never pushed into the same racetrack. But you cannot ignore destiny’s call for one such as Max Verstappen.

Max certainly ran towards racing on his own, in full force. But once he did so, Jos Verstappen left no stone unturned to make sure his son was the best on any track, at any time.
“I put 100% into his career, really,” he says. “That was my job.”
