As the 2023 season winds down, Mercedes finds itself at a pivotal crossroads. Two lackluster seasons, two missed championships, and a winless streak in 2023 for both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton have ignited a fierce determination within the Brackley-based team. Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledges the uphill struggle awaiting them in 2024. With Red Bull expected to dominate for years to come, Mercedes is undergoing a big transformation.

In a recent debriefing of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Mercedes‘ Head of Race Strategy dismissed any notion of a leisurely winter break. Instead, the Brackley-based outfit will be in the relentless pursuit of excellence to take the fight to Red Bull in 2024.

The focal point of Mercedes’ resurgence is the W15. The flawed W14 called for a new approach that Lewis Hamilton long demanded from his team. George Russell, reflecting on the past, critiqued the previous “quantity over quality testing” methodology. That, according to him, led to the W14’s shortcomings. Toto Wolff, the strategic mind behind Mercedes, emphasized a significant change in the car concept. The nightmare weekend in Brazil served as a reminder of the imperative to “change completely” for 2024.

With 2025 earmarked for new regulations in 2026, the stakes are higher than ever. “Ultimately, the aim of all of us here is to win championships,” explained Rosie Wait, Head of Race Strategy at Mercedes, while breaking down the season finale. “We weren’t able to deliver that this year. However, given the performance we had and the challenges we faced, P2 is a really good result. So, the mood this week is really one of happiness and relief at having delivered that P2. Now we can move on to putting all of our energies into going one better next year.”

The W14, far from retirement, embarks on a post-season test in Abu Dhabi, followed by Pirelli testing in Magny-Cours. In terms of the factory, there’s no such thing as a winter break. The winter period is often the busiest time. Many people in the factory have been focusing on next year’s car for months. Now that the racing’s over, the focus can switch entirely to that, and it’s all hands on deck to get the car ready ahead of pre-season testing in the first race next year.”

“We didn’t have a North Star necessarily at the beginning of the year, knowing exactly where we needed to work towards,” he admits. However, the return of technical director James Allison signaled a turning point, at least for Hamilton. The seven-time world champion reveals a newfound clarity. “Yes, I do believe we have a North Star now, which I don’t think we’ve had for two years. But still getting there is not a straight line,” he asserts. “But I think we understand the car so much better now. We have developed great tools in the background.”
