Home/F1

Having won everything there is to win in Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton has started to cater to his future. The Brit has amassed a massive $285 million in personal wealth as an F1 driver. Hamilton has been putting this wealth to good use with investments in various avenues. This is why Hamilton became part of the Denver Broncos consortium. Building on the record-breaking $4.56bn takeover, the Mercedes man also wants to become a part of the European footballing world. However, it will not be as straightforward as the Denver Broncos deal.

One of the most prestigious and successful English premier league clubs, Manchester United, is up for sale. The news of the sale of the soccer club has started a small bidding way among the world’s richest. Hamilton became a part of the bidding war with Mercedes’ principal sponsor INEOS’s majority shareholder, Sir Jim Ratcliffe. However, according to CNN, taking the bid over the line will be difficult for the Brits.

Despite all the rumors, there are currently only two confirmed bidders for the club. One is the consortium led by Jim Ratcliffe and the other is Qatari Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani. Sheikh Jassim, the chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), made the bid for 100% ownership. In that, the Sheikh will not only buy out the infamous Glazer family, but also all the current shareholders. Ratcliffe, on the other hand, has a consortium that wants “majority ownership” that keeps the current shareholders on board.

However, both these bidders have further competition from US-based hedge fund Elliott Investment Management. Moreover, multiple private groups in Saudi Arabia also submitted their bids. Despite the bidding war, there is little to no clarity on the club’s future. However, no matter who wins the bid, Lewis Hamilton is just happy to extend his efforts for black ownership in sports.

The Brit has been on his toes to invest in various sports franchises for quite a while. He was part of the Chelsea FC bid as well, which lost out to American investor Todd Boehly. Despite that, the Brit did not lose hope and is staying hopeful about the Manchester United bid with Ratcliffe in an attempt to increase black ownership as well.

“Jim’s part boss but partner – I’d say we’re more partners because we’re in this together and I hope in future to do something with Jim and build with him,” said Hamilton. He then added on the lack of black ownership and his efforts to change that. “I do want to get more and more involved in teams because I really do believe in black ownership – there is a lack of it in sports – and black equity. Again, there is a real lack of that.”
