Formula 1 is a cutthroat business to carve a niche out for yourself in. Dynasties are seldom created here as compared to other sports. However, when they are created, you know it’s on merits, given the highly volatile and unpredictable nature of the sport. Mercedes supremo Toto Wolff has the privilege of being counted amongst the very few who’ve actually masterminded a coup of F1, alongside Lewis Hamilton. The Silver Arrows’ stamp is clearly embossed on the turbo-hybrid era of the sport. Back in 2020, at the peak of their dominance, Wolff gave a forthcoming lecture, while name-dropping some of the biggest names in the sporting world.

After everything is said and done, Wolff will go down in the annals of F1 history as one of the greatest team bosses ever. That being said, what he has achieved in the sport with the German manufacturer may have elevated him to the highest pedestal of the entire sporting world altogether.

In an interview with Maxim.com in 2020, Wolff’s exploits with Mercedes and Hamilton were compared to the likes of Bill Belichick-Tom Brady and Phil Jackson-Michael Jordan, amongst others. He said, “So I think none of these people you mentioned would say it’s all about me, I’m the superstar. If so, they’re going to fail in their second careers, in my opinion, because it’s not about you.”

2020 may have been a happier time for the Austrian. 2021 was a blow to the gut. 2022 brought with it probably the team’s biggest letdown. However, as things stand, Mercedes & Co. still have a way to go before they hit rock bottom.

Toto Wolff slams commercial fallacies of having an 11th F1 team on the grid

The entire Formula 1 community is chirping with news in the air that F1 might get an 11th team on the grid soon in the form of an Andretti – Cadillac partnership. That being said, as fans are getting excited about this prospect, the businessman in Toto Wolff is shaking his head in disbelief.

He was quoted by Express UK as saying, “I mean, each of the organizations that’s sitting here on the podium has probably put more than a billion into the Formula 1 projects over the years, so it needs to be accretive.”

“If a team comes in, how can you demonstrate that you’re bringing in more money than it’s actually costing: because the 11th team means a 10 percent dilution for everybody else.”
