After an enthralling title fight, Max Verstappen was crowned the drivers’ champion for the 2021 season. Although a stroke of luck helped him get over the line, it was a deserving one for the Dutchman after a clinical campaign. The Dutchman clinched 10 Grand Prix wins and a record 18 podiums to end his career’s best campaign. Though it took him more time than many would have expected, it came after a truly exceptional showdown.

However, it didn’t look so rosy for the Dutchman all along. Lewis Hamilton took the lead early in the title decider and capitalized well on it through the course of the 58-lap race. With nearly 10 laps remaining, Hamilton had a healthy lead over Max and looked set to clinch his record 8th title.

It all changed when the Williams of Nicholas Latifi found the barriers on turn 9 and the race was under the safety car with 5 laps to go. Max Verstappen decided to pit and switched to soft compound tires. In last-minute disarray, race control asked the cars between the two title protagonists to unlap themselves and overtake the safety car. The race outcome was pretty much clear to the fans at that point.

Lewis Hamilton had to defend Max Verstappen on his 40 laps old hard tires while the Dutchman was on new soft compound tires. It came down to one last lap. The energy in the Red Bull garage skyrocketed as Verstappen took the championship-winning lead on rival Mercedes man.
