Lewis Hamilton is regarded as one of the most prolific black athletes in the entire world. His exploits on the track, as a 7-time Formula 1 world champion, have afforded him the status of a legend when it comes to F1 and motorsport in general. That being said, in the context of the whole sporting industry, a handful of black athletes have been able to carve a niche out for themselves. And when they have done that, it’s been massive. One such GOAT of the sporting world is LeBron James. As such, when it really counts, Hamilton is always there to big up and support athletes like James when they do the unthinkable.

Earlier today, James broke the NBA’s all-time scoring record. As reported by BBC, “Los Angeles Lakers star James hit 38 points in a 133-130 defeat by the Oklahoma City Thunder to surpass Abdul-Jabbar’s mark of 38,387, set in 1989.” It was a picture-perfect moment as the man who he had dethroned stood and applauded him in front of the crowd. On such a momentous occasion, Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton didn’t waste any time to congratulate the ‘King of kings’ as he’d once dubbed him.

NBA took to their Instagram to share a picture of James holding a card up with his total points to this day; 38,390. Lewis Hamilton then took to his own Instagram handle to congratulate and share his enthusiasm for James reaching this historic landmark in his career.

Both Hamilton and James have been inspirational for fans and even athletes themselves. But there was a time when LeBron James inspired the Brit, too!

Lewis Hamilton looks up to LeBron James as he hopes for success out of F1

What Hamilton has achieved in the sport has only come out of his determination to be the very best this sport has ever seen. That being said, by his own admission, it’s taken a toll on him from a more holistic perspective.

On the Jay Shetty podcast, Hamilton said, “When I’ve spoken to other athletes, we focus so much on being the best you can be in that one thing that the other things that you also love, like if it’s playing an instrument, or if it’s writing scripts, it all falls, everything falls away.”

But Hamilton has big plans for his future away from the sport. He used James’ example to give him the motivation to bring his plans to fruition. “You know, you’ve heard people tell LeBron [James] ‘shut up and dribble’ like, there’s a lot of people put you in a box and say this, you can only do one thing.”

“How can you compartmentalize staying in the zone and the focus lane, but also build up some of those other skills and discover other passions?”
