Lewis Hamilton has been in F1 for 16 years now. He has experienced the roller coaster of highs and lows in the sport. Being a 7-time world champion, people expect Lewis to bounce back from any situation. And the credit goes to his consistency and adaptability shown in his past performances. On the F1 Beyond the Grid podcast, Tom Clarkson asked Danica Patrick about Lewis Hamilton. The IndyCar race winner spoke about how Lewis overcame adversities in the 2022 season despite a tough start.
Patrick said, “Lewis [Hamilton] has been around for a really long time. And he has seen many different iterations of emotions throughout his career. So I think that he has done a really good job [in 2022].”
“He has been able to continue to get better and better throughout the [2022] season. There was a point in time early in the season, where he was really challenged and you could see the frustration, but rightfully so.
“I think that just speaks [about] his love for the sport and his passion and his drive. I feel he has a lot of drive.”
Danica raced in NASCAR and IndyCar before retiring from motorsports in 2018. She won an IndyCar race in Motegi, Japan in 2008 and competed fiercely in the NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Series. So, she certainly has great experience to point out how Lewis has recovered in a challenging 2022 season.
But this was not the first season in F1 when Hamilton was challenged by an underperforming or unreliable car. And amidst his championships successes, there were years when Lewis had to face agonizing outcomes.
Lewis Hamilton and his Tough Challenging Years in F1
Lewis Hamilton debuted in F1 with a bang. He had a stellar rookie season in F1 in 2007 when he just missed out on the world championship by 1 point. While he achieved redemption on that by winning the 2008 title by just 1 point and fittingly so, his further years with McLaren were not the best.
After two season-finale deciders, the McLaren car struggled in 2009. Hamilton won only 2 races in the season at Hungary and Singapore. Lewis struggled in the first half of the season without any podiums, it was the 2nd half when he got his couple of wins and some podiums.
Yet, throughout the period of 2010 to 2012, when Hamilton tried to challenge for the championship, the McLaren team disappointed him. Lewis either endured reliability issues from his car or pit stop errors from the team.

Meanwhile, Hamilton’s 2022 season has been on a similar trajectory. The Mercedes car was struggling badly in the initial part of the season. Lewis was also not getting any great results.
Although as the season progressed, the 7-time champion got better and better. Eventually, Hamilton got multiple podiums in 2022, though missed out on getting a race win.
