“Boys will be boys” is a common phrase that highlights the patriarchal outlook of the majority of the world. However, we, as a society, are doing better now holistically. We are putting in our efforts and taking active steps to change this mindset and balance the scales in all walks of life. Formula 1 isn’t an exception as well and the sport made strides toward inclusivity and diversity with the F1 Academy. The initiative promotes women in motorsport and gives young talented and enthusiastic drivers a clear and attainable path to the premier class. Mercedes man Lewis Hamilton has been an advocate for diversity for years now and his ally Susie Wolff is heading the operation to bring about his change in F1.
So after the first F1 Academy race and championship, the Brit showcased his support and greeted the aspiring women in Austin during the 2023 US GP weekend. Susie Wolff praised Hamilton for his efforts, but the same praise was met with a controversial statement by former NASCAR and IndyCar female driver Danica Patrick. The Sky Sports F1 made yet another shocking comment about women in motorsport, especially F1.

Danica Patrick should ideally be the flag-bearer for women in motorsport and should be someone young aspiring female drivers look up to. However, the American has made a host of controversial statements regarding the topic of women in motorsport that it is impossible to see her as an advocate for diversity. In fact, after Susie Wolff praised Hamilton for his gesture toward the female racers, Patrick countered the F1 Academy MD. Let’s first look at Susie Wolff’s comments.
“It’s a little bit sad that it’s always Lewis. He’s always the one offering support, coming over, and really, because I think in the end, he knows what it’s like to be the only one and so he has an affinity,” Wolff told Sky Sports F1.
Whilst Danica Patrick suggests that other drivers shouldn’t have to, if they don’t want, they should be ‘authentic’ 🥴. Authentic doing what? Hanging out with your gf’s racist family 🙈. If you decide to drive around with no.1 on your car, you should be doing more. https://t.co/5E1BKvgt5y

Addressing the F1 Academy’s MD, the 41-year-old expressed her opinion to the media. She said, as quoted by PlanetF1, “I think it has to be authentic, I really do. And we know more about Lewis because of the things that he does. And so while it would be nice, I’m sure for Susie to have more drivers supporting and being around and mentoring, they don’t have to, they just have to be true to themselves. Lewis loves it and you see him doing a lot of things and it’s really good. He plays a really big role and he has a lot of influence.”

This isn’t the first time Patrick has made a controversial statement about women in racing, especially in F1 as well. In the past, the former NASCAR driver made a sexist comment and followed that up with indifference toward women in F1.

The American has not herself favors after joining the Sky Sports F1 team as a reporter. The former NASCAR and IndyCar driver has often made a mockery of herself among the massive F1 fandom. During the Hungarian GP weekend, the American expressed her opinion on how women aren’t aggressive enough to compete in the circus. Later, during the weekend, she backed her claim with a hint of nonchalance.
When asked if she believes F1 is getting closer to seeing a female driver on the grid, she said, “You’re assuming I want that. You’re assuming that is important to me. And it’s not. It’s always like an interesting stance I have on it. I think what makes a sport really popular is great racing. Like you can have half the field out there [with] women and have them be follow the leader and it’s not gonna be interesting to watch.”
