Is Daniel Suarez's 2025 prediction a death knell for Sergio Perez's F1 career?

Sergio Perez already has one foot out the Red Bull door. The Mexican, after scoring poorly in the recent races, put his F1 career in a troublesome position. He has an existing contract with RBR that will go on till 2026, but the Austrian outfit has reportedly included a performance clause that can activate oust Checo. And in the 34-year-old’s place, the names of several potential replacements have already come up. Amongst them, there is Checo’s fellow Mexican racer Daniel Suarez, who currently competes in the NASCAR Cup series.

At 32, Suarez has already gained prominence as the first Mexican to win in the NASCAR Cup series. He also has a link to Formula 1 since he is the fiancé of Julia Piquet, the daughter of Brazilian 3-time F1 Champion, Nelson Piquet. In fact, Suarez even spent the 2023 Christmas holidays with the reigning Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen (as the Red Bull racer has been dating Julia’s sister Kelly). Given his relationship with Verstappen as well as his successful NASCAR career, Daniel Suarez can be a great addition to the Red Bull F1 team.

When ex-Ferrari manager Peter Windsor recently held a Q&A session with his fans on YouTube, one of the questions was regarding Suarez’s possible replacement of Sergio Perez, considering both share the same nationality. In a swift response, Peter Windsor said on his F1 Stream, “Uh, I’ll say yes. There you go, yes, why not, let’s say yes to that one.” Since Windsor has agreed that there is a chance that Suarez, not Perez, will be the only Mexican driver on the F1 grid in the upcoming races, this might spell danger for Checo since he now is hanging on to his Red Bull seat by a thread.

Moreover, Peter Windsor clarified another aspect regarding Sergio Perez’s recruitment at Red Bull when a fan asked whether it would be wise of Christian Horner to oust him before the Mexican GP comes around. The race, scheduled for October 27, 2024, has many enthusiasts awaiting a clear picture of what comes ahead.

Peter Windsor believes Red Bull will not oust Sergio Perez anytime soon

At the beginning of this current season, the news of Sergio Perez‘s contract renewal with Red Bull came as a surprise. Ever since joining the Austrian outfit, he has been outperformed by his teammate Max Verstappen, which was evident on most occasions. In the last five races, Checo scored only 11 Championship points while Verstappen secured 94. This stark difference between the two Red Bull recruits (which is very apparent at this point) has led to ongoing speculations with fans wondering if Horner’s army might oust the Mexican star to take up someone who can match Verstappen.

However, Perez is a big name in Mexico, and the Mexican GP is coming up in a few months’ time. So, if Red Bull sacks him right now, the audience section at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodriguéz might have way fewer members than in previous years, which means that the F1 viewership may take a direct hit if Red Bull ousted the only Mexican on the grid. Understandably, Peter Windsor thinks this would be a bad decision, considering the bigger picture.

While Sergio Perez brings several Mexican sponsors to the table, Red Bull needs a steady performance from him right now. The team’s Championship position is currently under attack because of the strong Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, and the McLaren stars Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
