How big can an individual personality get? That’s the question we always ask about F1 World champion Lewis Hamilton. Having received a knighthood less than a year ago, the Stevenage born was also made an honorary citizen of Brazil this week. Hamilton has always been well-loved in the South American country, which is also his hero Ayrton Senna’s homeland.
On this occasion, not only Hamilton but his mother too was filled with emotions. Lewis received the citizenship in a ceremony at Brazil’s Congress chamber in Brasilia. This was a special moment for the 7-time champion. As he has received unparalleled love and reception over the years coming to Brazil.

At the Sao Paulo GP weekend, the Mercedes driver told in an interview how his mother felt. He said, “My mum was in tears earlier in the week when we were facetiming.”
“She was like she can’t believe her son is receiving so much love in another country that’s far away from where she is from, so she wanted me to say thank you to everybody.”
Congressman Andre Figueiredo first suggested granting Lewis Brazilian citizenship. This was after the Briton won at Interlagos last year and carried the Brazilian flag to celebrate his 3rd win in Sao Paulo.
Lewis Hamilton and his Brazil connection
Ayrton Senna‘s homeland was always special to Hamilton. And he has had a cosmic connection with Brazil too. In 2007, Lewis missed out by a solitary point to claim his maiden world championship at Interlagos.
However, he got redemption just 12 months later as he won his first world title by the same 1-point margin. Cosmic!
