The two championship protagonists went at each other in Lap 26. After Hamilton exited the pits, he approached Turn 1 at the same time as Verstappen. However, disaster struck as the Dutchman clipped the kerb, and then Hamilton’s tires. The collision sent his car right above his British rival’s and stayed there as they ended up in the gravel trap.

Fans across the world commended the halo that’s present on F1 cars, as they believed it saved Hamilton’s life. Instead of the crash being fatal, the 36-year-old walked away with only a sore neck.

In a post on social media, Hamilton emphasised on how lucky he was to walk away from the incident. He also thanked his legion of fans for their support following his collision with Verstappen. Among his well-wishers was 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, who sent a brief message for the Briton.

She wrote, “Love you more everyday brother. My hearted stopped for a long time today. Stay safe. Your sis.” Along with her, last year’s US Open champion Naomi Osaka also commented on Hamilton’s with a few emoticons.

A few other celebrities who sent their regards were Chelsea full-back Reece James, Olympic gold medalist Lamont Marcell Jacobs, Joe Jonas and Zoe Saldana.
