“Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in,” said an upset Michael Corleone, on the brink of quitting the family business but brought back in. Now, putting this into the Formula 1 context, there would hardly be a fan who would want to ‘get out’ of the 2021 season. And as for pulling them back in, even more, Drive to Survive is right around the corner.

The popular Netflix series that has resulted in a gargantuan increase in F1’s popularity, will release its newest, much anticipated to season on the Friday of March 11, according to recent reports.

Even the supporters who aren’t really fans are excited about Season 4 of the series considering the insane level of drama we had the last season.

The insane effect of Drive to Survive on Formula 1

It cannot be overstated just how big an impact in the small time frame of fewer than two years Drive to Survive has had on the sport. According to an ESPN report, the 2021 season had an average of 931,000 viewers in the first 14 races.

This is a number that is considerably higher when compared to the two seasons prior to 2021; 53% higher than 2020 and 40% higher than 2019.

“There is not a way to quantify if the Netflix series has contributed to the audience increases, but it’s all positive,” said John Suchenski, director of programming and acquisitions at ESPN.

He continued, “Having additional F1 content out there that reaches a wide and different audience helps increase awareness and interest, and hopefully incentivizes them to tune into the races.”

Undoubtedly, the blockbuster rivalry will be the focal point of the new edition. But still, one wonders how Netflix would’ve fitted and cut content into its series from a season that was full of moments, each requiring its own episode.
