Mercedes is undoubtedly going through a royal slump since last year. On top of that, they are at the risk of losing their star driver, Lewis Hamilton. That is because the Briton is currently in the final year of his contract with the team. Speculations are running wild over his uncertain future as reports emerged earlier last month about Ferrari offering him an extravagant deal. As we enter the Monaco GP weekend, the issue has become the talk of the town. When asked Fernando Alonso if Hamilton should make a switch to the Maranello team, the Spaniard gave his opinion while taking a dig at his former McLaren teammate’s position.

Mercedes’ struggles started right from the day Hamilton lost the title win to Max Verstappen in Abu Dhabi in 2021. The following year, FIA introduced the ground-effect regulation cars. That was something the Silver Arrows struggled to cope with. Almost the entirety of 2022 went in just trying to tackle the porpoising issue. In 2023, the car just does not have enough pace to fight for the top spot.

Amidst all this, one thing is very clear, Hamilton, at 38, is hanging on in the sport just for that coveted 8th world championship. However, Mercedes, the team he has stayed with for 10 years now, looks to be in no position to give him that in the near future. However, just a few months back, the Briton took a dig at drivers who switch teams too often. Perhaps that was directed at Alonso who had moved from Alpine to Aston Martin. The Spaniard has now hit back.

When asked if Hamilton should move to Ferrari, Alonso, as per Crash, said, “I have no idea, but he always said that he wins and he loses together with the team, so… if he’s not winning, he should stay.”

Alonso has spent 5 years of his long F1 career with Ferrari. During his time with them, he came close to winning the title twice, finishing runner-up on those occasions.

Meanwhile, on the question of Ferrari offering Hamilton $49 million, team boss Frederic Vasseur has denied any such offer.

What Frederic Vasseur said on the Hamilton offer

Vasseur and Hamilton are quite well-known to each other and have mutual respect for each other. That is because they have worked together in the past. Back when Lewis was just a kid making his way up in motor racing through karting, Fred was his team principal. That is the reason when reports about the Ferrari offer came in, not many believed it to be untrue.

Vasseur, however, rubbished all such reports and rumors of a Ferrari offer to Hamilton. He said, “You know perfectly that at this stage of the season each week you will have a different story and we are not sending an offer to Lewis Hamilton, we didn’t do it. We didn’t have discussions.”

“I think every single team on the grid would like to have Hamilton at one stage, it would be bull**** to not say something like this.”
