When Lawrence Stroll entered the sport by acquiring Force India, not many believed in his project. However, the Canadian billionaire came with a clear agenda and not to witness the top teams continue as they were. Although, he was aware one can’t be successful in a highly competitive sport like Formula 1 overnight. In fact, in the beginning, he was a humble giant, keeping his head down and making small strides. Fast forward to 2023 and Stroll-led Aston Martin is arguably the second fasted car on the grid. This is a result of Stroll’s ambition and in order to keep growing, the Aston Martin owner will cut ties with Mercedes to achieve the ultimate F1 goal.

Until the new Aston Martin facility is open for use, the British team is heavily reliant on Mercedes’ base in Brackley. The British team currently uses Mercedes’ wind tunnel and also buys their engines from German automakers. However, Aston Martin recently announced it will purchase engines from Honda from 2026 onwards. This announcement came soon after Toto Wolff debunked any rumors of a broken relationship with Stroll.

Despite the suggestion of Mercedes will give engine preference to Aston Martin, the team has decided to part ways after what will be a 17-season partnership starting from the Force India era. What is the reason for this partnership termination? The team’s CEO, Martin Whitmarsh, explained the reasoning to Speedcafe.com.

“This is about the growing up of this team. You set out to win in Formula 1, and that means beating existing partners, and in order to do that, we’ve got to be independent,” he said.

“They’re in it to win, and clearly, we’re here to win as well, so ultimately, there is some incompatibility in those two missions, and that’s why we’ve taken this decision,” Whitmarsh added.

“The first and obvious example was, we currently share a wind tunnel with them, and yet, we’re having to spend a huge amount of money to build our own wind tunnel, which is only four or five miles from the wind tunnel – a quite adequate one–that we use,” said Whitmarsh.
