Things are not going Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes’ way at the moment. While they had a solid Spanish GP where the Brit finished P5, the Monaco GP has not started the way they wanted. Hamilton will start P8 during the race tomorrow behind his old foe Fernando Alonso.

The W13 showed potential after massive upgrades in Barcelona, but their porpoising issues continued during Friday’s free practice sessions and Saturday’s qualifying. As a result, the seven-time world champion struggled for pace.

The race could also prove to be a difficult one for him, as overtaking is tough on a track that is narrow and has slow corners. After a disappointing qualifying, he also gave his thoughts on the performance.

Lewis Hamilton reflects on qualifying performance

Lewis Hamilton was constantly complaining on the radio about the bouncing yesterday, and things improved, but only marginally. While Sergio Perez’s red flag costed Hamilton a final flying lap in Q3, he revealed that it might have made no difference.

He said, “ The red flags cost me my final lap, but I don’t think it was going to be much different to how it turned out anyway. In hindsight, I needed to get lap one on the tyres and I didn’t, after starting the lap in the wrong engine mode.”

Monaco has not been a happy hunting ground for Hamilton, compared to other venues, even when they dominated the sport. He revealed the car was out of shape during the qualifying.

“But Monaco is just like that, and it was an unfortunate session. The car feels pretty bad out there and we’re having to take some big risks to get anywhere near the times of the cars in front,” he stated.

Hamilton hopes the weather can play a part during the race

While the practice sessions and qualifying did not see any rain, forecasters expect the race to be a wet one. There is a 60% chance of rain and that could prove to be a race filled with twists.

Hamilton conveyed the car saw improvements from FP1 and FP2 sessions. However, they are far off the pace from the top two and he hopes rain can play a part tomorrow.

He added, “We improved the car from yesterday and got a little bit closer, but even with a perfect lap I think we’d still be six tenths off, which is a decent chunk. Now we need to see what the weather does tomorrow and try to make some progress up the field.”

Overtaking is a laborious task in Monaco, but with rain expected, Mercedes will look to capitalize on any errors. Where do you think Hamilton will finish? Leave your predictions in the comments.
