After a long, long time, Sebastian Vettel stans can rejoice once again. The German scored 10 points in Monaco to open up his Aston Martin account after finishing in fifth place. But it could have gone very wrong for him, as he was battling with Pierre Gasly coming out of the pits.
The Aston Martin think-tank decided to over-cut Gasly during their only pit stop. As Vettel came out of the pits, he was side by side with Gasly going into the third corner. On replays, it looked like the two were going to crash spectacularly, but thankfully, they kept it clean.
And the French driver himself joked about how close the two got during their on-track tussle after the race.

“I went to see him and I told him, ‘Look if there wasn’t one more centimeter, we could have squeezed.’ You know going up the hill, it’s not really straight, it’s actually turning. I was hoping for him to give me space.
“So, yeah, it was pretty close; it was tight, hard racing. But still fair and we still made it (without crashing). And if I would have been a little bit more aggressive, we would have probably both ended up in the harbor! So, I am glad we came out of it.”

The former Ferrari driver rolled back the years with a magnificent performance. It was vintage Vettel as he not only nailed his strategy with his superb tire performance, he also came out on top in wheel-to-wheel combat. And after the race, he admitted that the Gasly battle was close as he couldn’t really see him.
“It was very tight and you don’t really see much… Yeah, I quickly spoke with him and he said he didn’t know if I saw him and if I was going to give him room.”
