Mercedes’ Austrian team-principal Toto Wolff is one of the best at his job. Wolff led Mercedes to a crazy winning run of 8 dominant years. However, this season has been a punch to the gut for Mercedes. The Silver Arrows were caught out by the new regulations, and their rivals excelled to create a better car.

However, Toto and Lewis Hamilton aren’t shy of a challenge and will work aggressively to make things right and build a competitive car. The Silver Arrows won just one race in 2022, courtesy of George Russell winning his first-ever F1 race in Interlagos. The win was a silver-lining for the Mercedes faithful after enduring a torrid season.

Toto Wolff lives by one of Babe Ruth’s iconic quote

In a recent interview, Toto was asked how he handled the success of yesteryears and the current season, which has been disappointing. Toto said, “It’s quite interesting because something that I read from a famous baseball coach, “Yesterday’s home run doesn’t win you today’s game” and that’s very much true.

Wolff is quoting the legendary baseball player Babe Ruth. To date, Ruth holds the record for hitting 714 home runs. He was also one of the best left-handed pitcher in the sport. Ruth once hit an astounding 54 home runs in a single season, breaking his own previous record of 29.

He bettered that same record when he hit 60 homers in 1927. The former New York Yankees player also held the records of being the first batter to hit 50 home runs in a season (54 in 1920). Additionally, he was also the first batter to hit 60 homers in a season (60 in 1927) and the first batter to hit 500 homers in a career.

Taking wisdom from the MLB legend, the Austrian continued, “We are trying with simple actions to forget about the success of the past few years.

Mercedes will hope to return with a better and a competitive car next season. Their drivers have shown great character this season, and the onus is now on Wolff and co. to deliver a worthy machinery.

Toto Wolff’s confidence in his team and driver’s is one of the traits that makes him such a successful leader. The Austrian is hence confident of avoiding a similar fate suffered by their rivals who fell from the top spot. He cites the example of their rivals who have endured long winless spells in the past.

Wolff said, “With Ferrari, for example, they lost the whole of their top leadership and a key driver. That is something where you can trace it back. With Red Bull, it was a fundamental situation where the power unit changed upside down and no works deal.”

Furthermore, he added, “We are looking at that and thinking ‘We better be careful,’ because a season has gone by in a heartbeat. We can’t let it happen to look back at the end of next season and the one after, saying ‘That’s bitter’.”
