The wait is finally over. The inevitable, albeit with considerable doubt and deliberation, has finally happened. Lewis Hamilton has put pen to paper and extended his contract with Mercedes for two more years. The Brit signed the extension on 31st August as announced by the Brackley outfit and Hamilton will continue his decade-long relationship for two more years. One of the most successful teams on the grid will have the pleasure of housing one of the most successful drivers in the sport’s history till 2025. Commemorating the announcement Hamilton broke silence on his contract extension for the first time.
Hamilton released a statement soon after his contract extension and it is a statement of intent. After multiple suggestions, rumors, and roadblocks the world champion released a statement outlining his goals and ambitions for the future with Mercedes.
According to Reuters, the team statement from Mercedes read, “We dream every day of being the best and we have dedicated the past decade together to achieving that goal. Being at the top does not happen overnight or over a short period of time, it takes commitment, hard work, and dedication and it’s been an honor to earn our way into the history books with this incredible team.”

“We have never been hungrier to win. We have learnt from every success but also every setback. We continue to chase our dreams, we continue to fight no matter the challenge and we will win again. I’m grateful to the team who have supported me both on and off the track. Our story isn’t finished, we are determined to achieve more together and we won’t stop until we do.”

The statement of intent is powerful and highlights Hamilton’s hunger for the elusive eighth championship title. Let’s hope the Brit can achieve that in the next couple of years. If not, will we see another extension or will he hang up his helmet? However, to ensure that, according to one F1 expert, Hamilton’s teammate George Russell needs to be let go from the team.
After extending the contract of Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes needs to do the opposite with George Russell
Mercedes announced the extension of both their drivers until 2025. The powerful Mercedes team will be causing havoc together at least until the end of the 2025 season. However, if Hamilton’s and Mercedes’ goal is to help Hamilton achieve his eighth championship title, the Brackley outfit needs to fire Russell. This is the opinion of Peter Windsor as the British journalist and former boss believes Russell’s presence in the team can upset the dynamics in the long run.

“The problem is George, of course – it’s not anything more or less than that. And you’ve got to remember Lewis wanted to keep Valtteri (Bottas), so something big happened there in Lewis’ mind. They didn’t listen to him, and they signed George,” said Windsor.
He then compared the same scenario with Red Bull’s example. “Red Bull would never in a million years have thought of signing George Russell, even if he was available, and put him alongside (Max) Verstappen. But Mercedes did.”

Windsor’s logic is sound as no team wants to upset the dynamics and create an intra-team rivalry by pitting their loyal champion with a young championship contender. However, Mercedes wanted to secure their future while keeping their present happy. Have they managed to do so? The next couple of years will definitely reveal that. Exciting times ahead.
