Mick Schumacher, a former member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, joined Formula 1 in 2021 to drive for Haas. And after a respectable season for the team, he stayed with them through 2022 as well, working toward his goal of driving for Ferrari in subsequent years. That was until his dream was unceremoniously quashed when Haas team principal Guenther Steiner replaced him with his more experienced compatriot, Nico Hulkenberg. And he was left without a seat for 2023.

Almost every F1 fan has gotten a peek into what Guenther Steiner is like because of Netflix’s Drive to Survive. The Haas team principal is practically the show’s star with his outbursts and colorful language. But even though fans have gotten such intimate access into the behind-the-scenes of F1 because of the series, no one can really know what happens when the cameras aren’t tolling. But Mick Schumacher might’ve unintentionally revealed a tidbit about Steiner, and fans found it hilarious.

The German driver is Mercedes’ reserve driver for this season, helping the team on the simulator and during tire tests, relaying important data the team will require next season. And because of this role, he gets to work closely with the team principal, Toto Wolff. During a press event at the British GP, Schumacher was asked what it’s like to work with Wolff. He said, “Yeah, Toto’s great. He’s a great Team Principal. I think he’s probably the best one that I’ve worked with so far.”

Although he didn’t mean that as an innuendo—suggesting that Steiner wasn’t as good as Toto—the fans took it as one. Mick quickly added, “I didn’t mean it that way,” to say he has nothing against Guenther. But the fans had a mind of their own, and needless to say, Twitter went into a frenzy.

Fans can’t get enough of “Mick being shady”

When Schumacher was relieved of his duties at Haas after being replaced by Hulkenberg, Guenther Steiner said that they wanted a more experienced driver in the seat, which was why the young German was removed. Mick fans did not like that, and now that Mick subtly threw shade at Steiner, his fans are all for it. Listening to him say he didn’t mean what he said in how his fans were interpreting, many users wrote how they knew he did mean it that way.

A few fans loved his shady side and expressed just that.

Mick’s known to be a nice guy. One fan pointed out that even though he threw shade at Steiner, he was nice enough to try and cover it up.
