The Schumacher legacy in the world of motorsport is incomparable. At his peak, Michael Schumacher was simply untouchable. A testament to his skill and talent is that even when he made his F1 comeback, many had written him off. But he still showed those sparks of brilliance. In his final-ever Monaco qualifying, he stuck it on pole in a Mercedes! The team was nothing more than a midfield player back then. With Mick Schumacher too having shown glimpses of brilliance from time to time, it is safe to say that he has inherited the racing genes of his father. And by taking part in this year’s Race of Champions in Sweden, he made history.

The privilege of even competing against Michael Schumacher is something to brag about. For DTM legend, Mattias Ekström though, he holds the accolade of beating the 7x champion. Not once, but twice previously at the Race of Champions event. But this year, he did that elusive Schumacher double by beating Mick to the 2023 RoC crown.

After the race, Ekström was visibly emotional. However, it wasn’t the victory that choked him up. In the post-race interview with #ROCSweden, he said, “I had an okay start but already after half a lap something caught fire in the car. My co-driver, I think he wanted to stop but I was not so interested! It was amazing.” Fighting his emotions, he then turned to Mick.

“Even more… I think this [racing against Mick Schumacher] is something more special to me than actually winning. Everybody knows I had two finals against Michael when he was here and it feels so… fantastic in a way to compete against Mick.”

“It’s also very emotional for me because I had only great moments with Michael at this event. To see him [Mick] in a final is super special and I’m super proud!”

When the line-up for the 2023 Race of Champions Nations Cup was announced, all eyes were on team Germany. The dream team of Sebastian Vettel and Mick Schumacher were going to be teammates to ensure team Germany triumphed at this weekend’s event held in Sweden. But alas, that wasn’t to be!

According to PlanetF1, “Lining up against current Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich, Vettel moved off the line too quickly and although he managed to beat the Brazilian over the line, the five-second penalty he was handed pushed him to second place.”

“Team Germany needed Schumacher to beat Thierry Neuville to have any chance of reaching the final but he was unable to overcome the Team All Stars driver.”
