A “gifted racer” who was “nothing short of a phenomenon”, is how Sotheby’s described the great Michael Schumacher. The F1 racer, synonymous with the iconic Ferrari red and his record-breaking 7 World Championships was an absolute animal on the racetrack. With robotic perfection that outperformed all his rivals, he was a class apart. So, naturally, years later when his memorabilia went on auction recently, he struck gold with $2.6 million in proceeds.
10 months ago, Schumacher’s championship-winning Ferrari F2003GA (Chassis 229) was auctioned for $16.5 million. It was a record-breaking buy that only the German racer’s talent can justify. With that historic sale in the rearview mirror, in August of this year, auction house, Sotheby’s listed ‘Full Throttle – The Schumacher Collection’ to go under the hammer over a period of 3 weeks from August 16 to September 6.

150 artifacts, that were accumulated over a period of 30 years were specially curated. It included 75 lots of race-worn clothing, helmets dating back to his karting days, and bottles of celebratory champagnes. All these items were brought to Sotheby’s by a Japanese Consignor who is also a huge Schumacher fan. When such art-fact-like items are up for sale, it is bound to rake in the big bucks. And it sure did. According to reports from Bild, all the items were auctioned, garnering $2.6 million in the USA.

Benoit said, “There is only one answer to this question and that is what his son Mick gave in one of his rare interviews in 2022: ‘I would give anything to talk to dad’. This sentence says everything about how his father has been doing for over 3500 days. A case without hope.”
