Sergio Perez, who ended the qualifying with a crash, bagged his first Monaco GP win after outfoxing Carlos Sainz and his teammate Max Verstappen. On his way to the victory, Perez became the first Mexican to win a race in Monaco. To add to his stunning day, he is also the most successful Mexican driver in Formula 1 now.


The Mexican flag is now a common occurrence on the podium, thanks to Perez. Moreover, he could not control his emotions as he broke down in tears upon hearing the Mexican national anthem on the podium. It certainly shows the value and pride he has on representing his country.

As Mexico celebrated his victory as one of their own, the Government of Mexico also showed their appreciation to Perez via twitter. However, the tweet had a mistake which the fans did not fail to notice.

They posted a picture of Max Verstappen celebrating with a trophy instead of Perez. The picture even had the Dutchman’s name clearly printed on his race suit. They finally deleted the tweet after three long hours and a new one was posted soon after. It had Perez’s picture celebrating with the Monaco GP trophy.

Although they posted a wrong picture, all of Mexico will be proud of the 32-year-old’s achievement. He is now in the form of his life, and they will root for him to win the championship.

Sergio Perez reflects on his Monaco GP victory

While Perez only started P3, the team’s strategy was crucial for him to win the race. Red Bull nailed both their pit stops in the early part of the race, while Ferrari’s did not go to plan. Perez is usually known for his expert tire management and he once again showed it today.

Under pressure from Carlos Sainz in the last part of the race, he valiantly fought off the Spaniard on his way to secure his first victory of the season. A victory in Monaco is every F1 driver’s dream and Perez revealed his thoughts after the race.

He said, “Well, certainly very high up there, winning Monaco, it’s a dream come true as a driver. When you come into Formula 1 and when you come to Monaco, when you drive it for the first time, you always dream about one day winning the race or racing here.”

The win puts him right in contention for the championship as he is only 15 points behind leader Verstappen. Can he achieve the championship? We will have to wait and watch.
