The battle for supremacy is an ever-evolving drama. Let it be in life or in sports. As the 23 season unfolds, Mercedes finds itself facing an unexpected challenge. It’s not Red Bull or Ferrari that has Lewis Hamilton concerned; instead, he’s eyeing his rearview mirror at a surprising contender–Alexander Albon‘s Williams. The low downforce nature of tracks like Monza posed a particular challenge for the Silver Arrows, a weakness that had also been evident in races like Spa and Baku. In a sport where fractions of a second make all the difference, Hamilton is well aware that overtaking Albon might be as daunting as climbing a mountain.
To understand Hamilton’s concern, we need to rewind to the 2020 season. It was a year marked by intense battles and controversial collisions between Hamilton and Albon, then driving for Red Bull. In races like the Austrian GP, their clashes not only cost Albon podium finishes but also left a lasting impact on his confidence. Fast forward to 2023, and the tables have turned. Albon now pilots a Williams, a car renowned for its top-speed advantage on the straights, while Hamilton grapples with the Mercedes W14, which struggles for straight-line pace. During the quali session for the Italian GP, Mercedes found themselves grappling with their car’s limitations. The low downforce circuit at Monza exposed their lack of straight-line speed.

However, despite their struggles, they managed to secure fourth and eighth positions in the qualifying session, outperforming their expectations. Lewis Hamilton, always known for his relentless pursuit of victory, was not pleased with P8. He believed that his lap was compromised, particularly in the second and last sectors, as he struggled with the car’s handling. But the most surprising revelation came when Hamilton acknowledged that Albon starting P6, posed a substantial challenge. He noted, “Williams will be almost impossible to overtake. He is the fastest on the straights. But I will try to move forward somehow tomorrow. Where there is a will, there is a way.”

This candid admission shines a spotlight on the remarkable progress made by Williams and the driving skills of Albon.
