Toto Wolff Refuses to Sympathise With Michael Masi After His Firing

Formula One 2021 season was a thrilling sight for the fans. It was also a very controversial end to Lewis Hamilton’s season, which made him question his future at F1. Racing Director Micheal Masi had to face the wrath of the fans and heavy criticism after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

However, the FIA recently announced that Masi won’t be continuing as the racing director anymore. Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas have now replaced Masi and are expected to share the role on alternating weekends. President Mohammed bin Sulayem also announced that the racing room will undergo several changes. Fans can also expect to see a very VAR-esque setup this season.

Toto Wolff does not feel sorry for Masi

Micheal Masi’s termination was a hot topic for days. While everyone did not agree with his removal, many find it to be the right decision. In a recent interview, Mercedes’ Boss Toto Wolff pressed on the need to stick to the rules. He clarified that he did not feel sorry for Masi and stated that Masi’s decisions were “very polarizing and not always easy to understand”.

The 2021 season clearly wasn’t easy for the Silver Arrows. While the team won their eighth consecutive Constructors’ Championship, there was also a looming sadness over Lewis’s defeat. Lewis Hamilton, in a recent interview, questioned the stewards’ decision-making last season. He was quick to convey that he wasn’t happy with whatever happened last season and wants a fair decision-making team.

It’s easy for anyone to understand that both Wolff and Hamilton are happy with Masi’s removal. Wolff had previously stated that he did not feel that Masi manipulated the race, but his actions were also not justified. He said, “I can’t estimate what pressure the race director was under at that moment, but the rules are the rules”.

Mercedes wants to move on

Wolff, in another interview, also stated, “I think we need to put it aside and we are not going to forget it because that’s simply impossible, but we need to look into 2022.” He also clarified some claims regarding Masi’s departure and stated that Hamilton’s stay had no role to play in that.

Mercedes recently revealed their W13 car for the 2022 season. They clocked in the fastest time at the Barcelona pre-season testing. The British driving duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton is going to be very interesting to watch. They are, perhaps, set to remind the fans of the epic showdown between Nico Rosberg and Hamilton at Mercedes.

The new season begins on March 20, 2022, at the Bahrain International Circuit and, with the new guidelines, all set to make their debut, we expect this season to be a blockbuster.
