What can an F1 Team Principal do when he finds himself helpless? When his drivers are being beaten time and again by the rampant robot that Max Verstappen is, taking shots at Red Bull is the only thing that Toto Wolff can think of. He is the latest entrant in the list of Formula 1 entities that have blamed the Milton Keynes outfit for being biased to the 2x champion. However, his statements about the same have created a stir because of the hypocrisy embedded deep into it.

Upgrades to the car is what makes it fly. This is true in Mercedes‘ case because they had a slow car to begin this season. To make it better, they got some upgrades for the British GP, which made the car more pointy. The Silver Arrows’ Engineering Director, Andrew Shovlin, comparing their Monaco upgrades to the ones brought at Silverstone, had then said, “When we made changes to the car in Monaco, it got a bit pointy and the front end is quite direct. And it’s a fine line between that being helpful to your driving style and it being a bit of a hindrance. There are some items we brought here (Silverstone) to try to adapt the car a bit more towards Lewis’ style.”

In Red Bull‘s case, bringing major upgrades is not something that they look at. Because they have been flying for what seems like an eternity now. However, this is where Wolff’s concerns come in. While the Dutchman is miles ahead, his teammate, Sergio Perez isn’t. So there has to be a bias within the team, feels the Mercedes Team Principal.

After the Dutch GP Qualifying, Wolff told Sky Sports, “It’s hard to understand why the gap is so huge. On the other hand, we’ve seen Max destroy all his previous teammates. Maybe it’s because he has the car built around his preferences. It’s then pointy to drive, but he can cope with it.”

Here is the conundrum that fans are having. If Wolff’s team can curate the car to Lewis Hamilton‘s preferences, why can’t Red Bull do it for Verstappen? On one hand, the Austrian has blamed his team’s rivals for playing internal politics. On the other hand, he has also appreciated what they have been doing in terms of consistent performance.

On race days, Formula 1 is all about the minute differences in lap times that can change the course of a race. It is the irregularity in circumstances and other factors that make the sport exciting. With Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s dominance, F1 has lost that thrill, believes Toto Wolff. Nevertheless, he is determined to overthrow their reign.

“Unpredictability is what makes the sport exciting,” Wolff said, as quoted by The Telegraph. “That’s not happening because one team and one driver are doing a much better job than anyone else. We need to acknowledge that. (But) It’s down to us to find solutions.”

The ambition is absolutely lovely and admirable. But only time will tell if Mercedes can bring about concrete change to achieve their targets.
