The F1 off-season was, as usual, filled with drama. However, this time, things took an ugly turn, as the FIA decided to launch an investigation on Toto and Susan Wolff on “conflict of interest.” That obviously split the fans, some of whom took to the internet to abuse the couple. After all the F1 teams presented a united front, and FIA withdrew the investigation, Toto and Susie Wolff did not take it lying down.

Not so surprisingly, they have left the door open for a legal battle against the FIA. In a recent statement, both husband and wife put out statements talking about this whole ordeal.

While there is no lawsuit filed yet, the Mercedes team principal recently released a statement that talks about a legal exchange with the FIA.

“We understand that there is significant media interest in the events of the week, we are currently in active legal exchange with the FIA. We await full transparency of what took place and why and have expressly reserved all legal rights. Therefore, we ask for your understanding that we will not be commenting officially for now, but we will certainly address the matter in due course,” the statement reads.

However, his wife Susie put on a more elaborate statement about the issue. She talks about the whole ordeal in detail and, importantly, goes into how it destroyed her personal life. “I have received online abuse about my work and my family. I will not allow myself to be intimidated and intend to follow up until I have found out who has instigated this campaign and misled the media.”

The lack of transparency seems to be the central point that connects the two statements from the power couple. Even Toto Wolff’s statement talks about demanding full transparency from the FIA, and this might be the area where they might engage their lawyers.

Susan Attacks FIA’s Lack of Transparency

In her detailed statement, Susan first goes about the lack of accountability that FIA took with this whole incident. “When I first saw the statement issued by the FIA yesterday evening, my first reaction was: “Is that it?”. For two days, insinuations have been made about my integrity in public and through background briefings, but nobody from the FIA have spoken to me directly.”

Mrs Wolff also believes that she might be collateral damage in an attempt to discredit someone else, leading her to lose her credibility. She believes the damage was due to an unfounded press release. “I might have been collateral damage in an unsuccessful attack on somebody else, or the target of a failed attempt to discredit me personally, but I have worked too hard to have my reputation called into question by an unfounded press release.”

Naturally, she is not happy about what happened and blasted the FIA for the events that unfolded over the last couple of days. “This episode has taken place without transparency and accountability,” she says. “What happened this week is simply not good enough. As a sport, we must demand, and we deserve, better.”

While there are speculations about who that “other person” might be, fans seem to be sure she’s talking about Toto Wolff. There is one thing that we know for sure though, there will definitely be a lot of attention around this controversy over the next couple of months.
