Fortunes can quickly change in a brutal sport like Formula 1. And like they say, ‘You’re only ever as good as your last race.’. For Lewis Hamilton, reality can bite really hard. After almost a decade-long run of rampant dominance, the racing gods had had enough. They wanted a new King and got it in the shape of Max Verstappen. However, as the Dutch lion threatens to obliterate Hamilton’s legacy, the Brit has spoken up.

At first glance, it surely does sound hypocritical of Hamilton to ask for policing of the rules to ensure that Red Bull and Verstappen don’t enjoy their dominance. Mind you, the Bulls are only into the 2nd year of their out-and-out pace advantage whilst Hamilton basked in the sunlight of glory from 2014 through to 2020. But if you dig deeper, he does make a compelling argument.

When Hamilton’s idea to restrain the Bulls from developing their car for next year was tabled to Verstappen, he shrugged it away by saying, “Life is unfair as well. It’s not only F1. A lot of things in life are unfair so we just have to deal with it.” That really must have stung for the Brit.

However, when posed with this rationale once again by M4 Sport, Hamilton explained, “You hear fans say, ‘Yeah, well you had a dominating car, too and now you’re complaining!’ But it’s not like that. I think for all of us, we all want, even when I was, when we were at the front, we want the best competition always. And you want it to be close.”

“That’s what we’ve grown up dreaming of. That’s what we go to every race for.”

And when you hear Hamilton speak, you can really see him already getting bored of watching Verstappen win almost every weekend!

Hamilton gets cheeky to kill Verstappen boredom

If you were in Lewis Hamilton’s shoes, you would’ve hated Verstappen’s guts, too. But the Belgian Grand Prix was probably the last straw for the 38-year-old 7x champion. When quizzed about Verstappen’s dominance, rather than giving a straightjacket PR response to add to his boredom, he put his funny hat on.

Hamilton began, “What do you want me to say?! I haven’t spoken to him.” He then went on to make a hilarious Austin Powers: Goldmember reference! He joked, “He’s having a smoke and a pancake!”
