After what felt like a decade, Lewis Hamilton finally signed a new deal with Mercedes. The Briton was linked to a Ferrari move and even retirement. There were many more rumors during this period of uncertainty. However, the 38-year-old has signed the deal and made a statement that he is here to stay. It’s intriguing how Mercedes decided on Ferrari’s home race to announce Hamilton’s contract.
Regardless, we all know what Lewis Hamilton’s ultimate dream is and why he signed the Mercedes extension. It is to win the mythical 8th title that will make him a record-breaker. However, his comments from yesterday suggest it’s not only about winning the 8th title. His ‘I’m not revengeful’ claims have also been dismissed based on the same secret message.

Hamilton told the media that he signed the contract because he and Mercedes had unfinished business. The hosts of the ‘F1: Chequered Flag podcast’ revealed the actual meaning behind Hamilton’s cryptic statement. They explained how the unfinished business referred to the revenge that the Brit wants to take against Max Verstappen and Red Bull for the 2021 Abu Dhabi tragedy.
The host of the podcast said, “Well, the key phrases that he used, the first one was ‘unfinished business’. Everyone in the paddock knows what he’s talking about. It’s Abu Dhabi 2021… the title that Mercedes and Hamilton thought was robbed from them by the FIA and race director Michael Masi. When he was asked about that specific, he said ‘I’m not really a revengeful person’.”
With Max Verstappen already having one hand in the 2023 title, focusing on the next year makes sense for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. However, the Briton advised how Mercedes will not take its foot off the gas and will continue its attempt to close the gap to Max Verstappen and Co.

There have been concerns that Mercedes is willing to let the 2023 season go and fully focus on the next year. They want to give Hamilton a competitive car that’ll be able to challenge Max Verstappen. However, Hamilton disregards all his complaints regarding the team and advises how he is proud of the Brackley stable. The team will continue to push to finish P2 in constructors and attempt to catch Red Bull as well.
During the Thursday press conference, Lewis Hamilton said: “I’m really proud of what we achieved last year to get through it; and then, whilst we started on the wrong foot this year, to have some really great results. We’re second in the constructors championship, and the plan is to keep that and then close the gap to the guy ahead.”
