Lewis Hamilton is arguably one of the last drivers from the golden age of Formula 1. Today, on the grid, the general populace is filled with the new generation of drivers who have the baton passed on from the greats like Sebastian Vettel & Co. to carry the sport in the future. And even though Max Verstappen is already a 2x champion, well on his way to his 3rd, he still is a very young lad at the age of 25. He may be winning on the track, but Hamilton strongly believes he’s winning off of it in comparison.

Hamilton is a pretty diverse character. While his sights are firmly set on that elusive 8th world title, he does have a lot of varied interests outside the sport, too. He’s into music, fashion and most recently, the art of producing a Hollywood blockbuster. Hence, for the 38-year-old, Verstappen and Co. are just wasting their time with an obsessive and fruitless lifestyle as compared to his own.

The current crop of young F1 drivers like Verstappen, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc really epitomize the new generation. They enjoy a nuclear lifestyle, are relatable and do it all with a teenage smile on their faces. But the weight of wisdom is something that Hamilton prefers over these youths.

While speaking to M4 Sport, Hamilton was quoted as saying, “They don’t do anything else most of the year apart from gaming and waking up and training! But I have all these other things that I’m doing at the same time,” while referring to the young ones on the F1 grid.

But don’t let Hamilton’s words fool you! Back in his day, he was a pretty avid ‘gamer’, too.

While Hamilton disses the sim racers of this generation, he preferred to take his ‘gaming’ out in the open. Safe to say, back in his time the connotations of what games entailed were different. But more often than not, he let’s his inner child triumph over his wise self anyway.

Back in 2021, Hamilton came onto his Instagram account to share a rejuvenated part of his childhood: his beloved RC car! He wrote, “This is my Turbo Burns radio controlled car that I raced when I was 5 years old. My brother kindly had it rebuild for me recently and it’s running like a gem.”

“This is the car I raced on BBC in 1990 when I was dreaming to being a formula 1 driver. We’ve come a long way but this still gets me as excited as when I was a kid.” What’s more? Even when it comes to sim racing, Hamilton isn’t shy to bust out his Sega Genesis to give the age-old classic, Ayrton Senna’s Super Monaco GP II a tidy spin!
