Formula 1 is not just a competition between drivers going wheel-to-wheel for glory. So, Lewis Hamilton can be better than Max Verstappen in all aspects of racing but would still struggle in comparison if the machinery under him doesn’t assist his talent and hard work. Who the better driver is will always be up for debate. But currently, in terms of car construction, Red Bull is the obvious winner. Mercedes can complain all they want a former Ferrari boss reckons that they cannot have an excuse when their rivals, adhering to the same rules, are performing so proficiently.

Toto Wolff has time and again highlighted how the $135 million budget cap is hampering Mercedes. He explained that because of its intricacies, bringing upgrades has been taking relatively longer than before. However, Red Bull is operating within the same constraints. And they are doing a stellar job within it. Ex-Ferrari manager, Peter Windsor too underlined this to bash the Silver Arrows for their underperformance.

On his YouTube channel, Windsor said, “There are so many variables that have risen because of the budget cap, because of the limitations on CFD design, and because of all the other stuff that comes with that, including the Sprint race format. Given all those constraints, Red Bull have shown that it is possible still to do a great racing car consistently from one race to another. So as long as Red Bull are showing that, everybody has to hang their head in shame.”

Max Verstappen is a generational talent. To his luck, Red Bull has provided him with a car that is near-perfect in all aspects. And this combination is helping them to break historic records. On the other hand, their arch-rivals, Mercedes have a considerable amount of issues. Out of those, an unstable rear part of their W14 is what is troubling both their drivers.

Russell explained, as quoted by Express, “I think something we’ve been trying to improve a lot is just the through corner balance of the car. I think both Lewis and I are searching for a bit more confidence and rear end in the car so that we can hit the ground running during a race weekend. I think that’s something that Red Bull have done a really great job of. Allowing their drivers lap one of the weekend to go out push to the limit and in little fear of crashing the car or spinning out.

It doesn’t look like 2023 is the year when the Silver Arrows find their rhythm back. The focus needs to shift to 2024 while maintaining current performance.
