In a recent turn of events, Lewis Hamilton seems to have set aside his grudge against Sergio Perez from the Abu Dhabi 2021, at the Mexican Grand Prix. Ahead of the commencement of the GP, the Mercedes driver took Checo’s side as he made a veiled jibe at a Red Bull spokesperson.

2023 has been quite a rollercoaster of a ride for Red Bull. Despite absolutely dominating on track, the team has been plagued with several controversies. One such incident has been Helmut Marko’s public criticism of Checo, which has resulted in the driver struggling with mental issues. And as if all this wasn’t enough, Red Bull’s arch nemesis, Lewis Hamilton, recently weighed in on his opinion, as he took a subtle jab at Marko.

An honest and supporting Hamilton explained the difficulties that Checo situation might do, from a driver’s perspective. He stated, “As I driver I understand the psychological and the mental pressure weighs so heavily on you. It’s hard to explain to put into words.”

However, in typical fashion, Hamilton stayed true to himself as he shared his honest thoughts. He continued, “I don’t think his team been really massively supportive of him. I wouldn’t say ‘the team’ because there’s a lot of people within the team, but one of the particular spokesperson has not been really great, helping psychologically.”

Hamilton did not shy away from obviously talking about Helmut Marko, who has not really helped Checo much. Especially with his open criticism towards him.

The Mercedes driver went the extra mile as he shared how he would feel if this happened to him. “If I heard Toto talking negatively about me on the weekends… would be really quite tough. So, difficult environment for him.”

Hamilton’s outright support for Checo is both understandable and surprising. Understandable because Lewis Hamilton has sportsmanship in his veins. However, let’s not forget about Hamilton’s wounds from the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2021 and the fact that Hamilton is also eyeing up to overtake Checo in the driver’s standings.

Is Hamilton playing the ultimate mind games?

An extremely debatable discussion arises from Hamilton’s recent words. Is Lewis Hamilton possibly playing mind games? From the looks of it, it’s highly likely that he is not. However, you simply can not ignore the fact that he is also in a fierce battle with Sergio Perez for the #2 position in the driver’s standings.

Red Bull put a lot of pressure on Checo to defend his position in the remaining four races. And Mercedes, with their recent floor upgrades, helped Hamilton to give the opposition a mighty challenge. The answer to the fundamental question remains unknown, at least for now.

As Hamilton takes a jibe at Helmut Marko over Sergio Perez’s mental health struggles, all eyes are on the Mexican Grand Prix.
